How can I get lots of people to come to a show in NYC?

I run various shows at different venues in New York City, including comedy and music shows. I have no problem getting great talent, but I’d like to build up more of an audience at the shows. I’d rather not send people out of the street with flyers and stuff, and craigslist event postings don’t usually help much. Does anyone have any new or interesting ideas for attracting an audience to a show in New York City?

Need somewhere cheap to stay in New York (or area) for 3-4 months. Suggestions?

I plan on doing an internship in New York City-area for 3-4 starting at the end of May and will be there, more than likely, until the end of August. I need somewhere to stay, but can only go $650/month max.

Is this even possible? What are some areas relatively close? Other suggestions? I already looked into hostels and it’s just not cost-efficient for me. I tried looking on Craigslist for temporary housing/sublets but it’s too early to get a good idea.
