How can I verify that “licensed” real estate broker is indeed a broker?

I am currently in the middle of signing a lease with this real estate broker that I found through an add on craigslist. I saw the apartment and liked it very much. The application was at no fee, and he called later to tell me that I got the apartment. What keeps me a bit alert is: (1)his business card does not specify the address of his office, (2) his email is hotmail account, (3) he wants me to sign the lease in the apartment (why not his office). Basically, I want to know if there any way to verify that this broker is legitimate and not a scam.
I like the way to check posted by John S. Is there such online services for New York City?

we don’t know eachother a whole lot ..we had a class together this summer….then i had msg’d her on facebook…we talked a bit…then when we got on aim…one time i was like can i ask u something if ur not busy..she was like yeah but im about to go to bed though…i was like nvm then bye…she was like umm okay bye……

did i ovvereact? I seem to like this girl thats y i get upset fast i guess …should i apologize or just give her time and talk to her later considering we dont know eachother that well..we only talked like one time in class…and shes back to her university city…she just went to my college to takea summer course
