I would like to find an apartment, loft, B&B or some other kind of alternative lodging in Shanghai, China. I usually use Craigslist for that, but the Shanghai section is not very active.

find a local Chinese travel agent, they can offer good rates on some hotels, when you get there, find a local real estate office for rent. practice Chinese before going there, it will help big time. if you can speak the language, you get the best deal. have fun.

I like the Captains Inn directly at the Bund, it’s cheap, clean and has a nice atmosphere. It’s a Youth Hostel though.

When we first moved to China we stayed in a short term apartment. It was relatively cheap. But really crappy. I am not sure that B&Bs are so popular in Shanghai. Youth hostels are relatively new.
Try to Moller Villa (ask to stay in the house) http://www.mollervilla.com/en/main.asp (photo does not do building justice)
http://www.mollervilla.com/en/male_more.htm (click the one of the building)
(might compare rates using ctrip)
Or the Ruijin Guesthouse. (google it)
The Peace Hotel or Cathay have some history attached to them.
These are smaller hotels in a unique and convenient setting.
I like to stay in B&Bs too. I think these are intresting places to stay in Shanghai. I live here (so I never stayed there though)
