In Brooklyn, NY is it common to pay 1 month apartment rent as brokerage?

All the listings I saw in Craigslist for Brooklyn, NY required that I pay an amount equal to one month rent as brokerage. The amount for brokerage varies from $750 to $1500. This is besides the security deposit and first month rent.
This amount is quite steep by Bay area, CA standards.
Is it common in Brooklyn?

Yes it is, When I moved I paid 1,000 for the broker, 1,000 for security and 1,000 for the first month. If you look for your own apt you can get out of paying the brokers fee.
