There are tons of companies who sell their ad inventory hemselves, but not all companies are able to reach the right person and the rigth company to sell off their ad inventory. At the same time, the advertisers do not have the time and energy to evaluate the effectiveness of advertising at so many websites. Yahoo/Overture PPC, Google Adwords, and other niche PPC engines help the advertisers and publishers connect to each other via Yahoo Publisher Network and Google Adsense. I think, that works pretty easy for small scale buyers and sellers.
