What is the best way to find a cost-effective place to live in NY/NJ area?

I am looking at craigslist. I am also looking at classified at the Jersey city journal.
does anybody know other sources to find an independent appt/ shared accomodation?

    Craigslist is the bible of nyc apt. finding. Look at astoria queens its 12 min from midtown and is still pretty cheap.

    You can do what we did and move elsewhere……sorry couldn’t resisit we moved out of NY 2 years ago it was getting to expensive
