What is the best way for a freelance web developer/graphic designer to pick up work in NYC?

Other than the swamp of Craigslist…

  1. Create a portfolio of projects that you’ve worked on, or if you haven’t worked on anything you’re proud of yet, create 5 sample html mockups. This gives you a base so when someone finds your site, they see you didn’t just start html 1 week ago. Make your site as good as possible, but don’t be so cutting edge you scare off 90% of your clients.

Go to k10k.net and click the matchmaker in the middle of the page. This is a place where artists get together to work on each other’s projects. Get well-known there and you’ll start pulling referrals.

There are a ton of websites that are looking for free or cheap web work, especially for non-profits. Do work for them and you’ll be surprised how quickly someone sees your work and contacts you for a real gig.

There’s no way to press a button and pick up work, but you can work on making yourself as desirable as possible, then spreading your name around through projects. Good luck!
