It depends. Some websites shell out big bucks for large WAN connections. Such as $15,000 for an OC-3 which is 155.54 MegaBytes Per Second.
Others use caching servers. They pay a company to keep a proxy copy of their websites in their regional communication centers, and then they refresh those 1,000 servers every 10 minutes, and let people talk to those servers, rather than service all the users themselves. You can look around the internet for pricing on WAN connections but most need to do a site survey so they can get an acurate price for you.

I am a Software Engineer and have been designing web sites for more than 10 years.
It depends on what you are going to have on your web site. Most web hosting company let you store limited amount of data and limited amount of transfer, some call think bandwidth.
If you have a file which is 1MB and there are 1000 request for that file, then the data transfer would be 1MB * 1000. So you need 1 GB, if you pass the bandwidth limit, you may have to pay.
You can get a dedicated server or shared hosting. For dedicated server, hosting company may NOT provide support. The advantage is you’ll have full control over it. I assume it would be faster too, since you are not sharing the machine with anyone else.
