For one reason, it makes it slightly easier to stop puppies from going to science labs to become experimental subjects. Free dogs can be scooped up by local labs. Next, if it's from a shelter, even if the puppy has only been cared for at the shelter for a short time, the shelter has incurred costs for its care. Remember that shelters are almost always non-profit organizations. This isn't about them making a profit, but rather, your donation goes to make sure there's enough chow and vet care for the next round of puppies. If you're wondering why some local person whose dog got pregnant by accident would ask for money, well, they too incur costs. Pregnant dogs have to go the vet. Puppies need shots. And, again, people want to make sure that folks are legit. It's a psychological thing. Puppy owners think that if you can't belly up to the bar to pay $100 for the puppy, what's the likelihood that you'll pay a couple hundred for spaying, or vaccination, or a necessary surgery when the dog gets sick. We actually got a nearly "free" puppy last year. Spay and unexpected reactions to vaccines: over $200. Microchip $25 at clinic or $45 at vet. Other checkups and shots $75. Training class: $80 Does not count chow and toys. Now consider an adult dog, houstrained, partly obedience trained, known temperament, no known health issues, over all the puppy illnesses, all shots, spay/neutered, chipped, only needs rabies every 3 years. Purebred.
