Now I have a huge muddy mess and dead grass sod. What can I do? Improve soil or cover it up?
OH yeah, I started out with mainly clay HEIP ME
I got free top soil from Craigslist, only it is not topsoil it is SILT.?

Sorry…start again. You might get somewhere by improving the soil, but not likely.
Get a rototiller, use it. Then get good SOIL and lay it over your rototilled surface. Put your soil or grass plugs down and aerate.

Silt is top soil.Go to a green house in your area and ask them.

silt is medium organic and inorganic particles (clay is small and sand is large)
You need to increase your drainage (eliminate the “muddy”)- easily done by adding copious amounts of sand.
once the “muddy” is gone you can add compost or true topsoil to improve your soil.
As fo the grass – just turn it under with the sand…it will breakdown and help.
As a stopgap messure you can cover area with hay (but this gives LOTS of weed seeds) and turn the hay under withthe sand after its dried out some
