   if your using IE: try this Tools>Internet Options> Programs
   Sometimes you have to download something to make it work right.I know that making yahoo mail your default you have to download something to make it work. Try hotmail help. try searching something like make hotmail default email client.

   First, click start, settings, control panel, then internet options, programs, then on the email box, select the client you want to make the default email program..click apply, then ok..that should do it..
