  1. Don't let boneheads convince you not to major in elementary education. If it is your passion, you will excel. On the other hand, if you aren't completely into it, you may not do as well. Being a half-ass teacher is worse than being a half-ass something else.

Assuming you have the fire to be a great teacher, you will get plenty of job offers. When you do you student teaching and observations, you will have plenty of opportunity, if you are good at what you are doing. Now that that issue is out of the way, I can answer you question.

Here in New York City, there are plenty of summer jobs for teachers, but you may not actually want one after you do a year of public school teaching. $34K is manageable if you live in the Midwest and don't
    have huge debts.

You probably shouldn't major in education if you think there is absolutely not way you can be happy making 40 or 50K per year. If it takes a lot of money to make you happy, look into other career options. In the case you do become a teacher, you may eventually have a chance to make a lot of money (say you become a principal or a professor), but you shouldn't count on making that money in the educational field.

What you really need to be asking is, "Is money paramount to my happiness?"

Don't worry though. Most of us struggled with that question coming out of high school.

  2. If you work for a school that has summer school, it is fairly easy to get a summer job. You generally work about 4 hour work days for summer school and get paid about 3/4 as much as you would during the school year. (So if you make $20 an hour during the school year, summer school would be $15 an hour. It is more than that, but I am just presenting numbers). During holidays, trust me, you dont want to work…you will want to relax.

You have to get a job as a teacher first though! It is fairly hard to get a job as a teacher, at least in an elementary school. There are so many jobless elementary school teachers its ridiculous. I would suggest teaching high school if you could handle it.

FIRST OF ALL "JAMES J" I do have the fire to be an elementary teacher, but you cant show that on your resume to get the interview. When I student taught the teachers I worked with said that I was wonderful and comparable to a veteran teacher. My college supervisor made calls for me to schools and STILL no interviews or job offers besides my inner city job. I am a great teacher with a passion for the job and I dont have a job offer from another school…so before you live in my shoes I suggest you dont judge. Not everyone can get a job in their chosen major…I know PLENTY of college graduates without a job in their major. So basically, forget you. I only said I suggest another major, because getting a job isnt easy..sheesh
