It's pretty straight forward: Google AdSense (and other programs, I'm pretty sure Yahoo has one, too) will pay you a certain amount every time someone clicks on an ad that's shown on your site that's being served up from their service. The link in the ad first takes the person visiting the link back to Google, where they make a notation in their database that you were the one who had the ad listed, then it gets forwarded on to the advertiser's site (of course, all of this happens behind the scenes, and only takes a few seconds to transact). Ads are served up based on the text content of the page on which they're shown, so one of the key ways to make money with it is to have pages that are focused on "expensive" ideas (expensive in this case being related to the value of the ad itself, not the idea on the page).
As for how to earn money, you're noly going to get a few pennies for each click. So you're going to need lots and lots of people to visit your site, and a good percentage of those to click on the ads. That's a pretty dark art (as in "obscure", not "evil"), and you won't get any valuable information for free on how to do it. First build you a web site! Then sign up for Adsense! Pick the method for advertising, you can pick content or a specific product! All you do is customize the look and copy the code and paiste the code into your pages html! Then figure out how to drive traffic to your site! When someone clicks on the ads you get paid! It works well! Remember if you ever click on your own ads they may(Will) ban you for life! It has happened to 3 people i know, they did it by accident also!

You need a website of some sort. You can get free web pages via several avenues, including Google. Or you can pay a small amount (I paid $5.95 per domain name per year) for your own domain name.
Then apply for your Google Adsense account. I was approved for mine in three days. This is free to you.
After you place the ads on your site, you are paid a few pennies each time a viewer clicks on an add. Google sends you a check when your account exceeds $100.00.
That is it in a nut shell.
Then the more challenging part begins after you have your ads set up. You need to get traffic to your site. You need to place your ads effectively. You need great site content to interest readers. The list goes on.
