How do I set my Facebook account so I have to approve friend requests before someone can add me as a friend?

I am new to Facebook and still learning. When I try to add others as friends, it usually tells me that they need to approve my request to add them as a friend. Yet I keep getting messages that others have added me as a friend and I never have to approve anything. I have looked through the settings and can't find any way to set it up this way. How do I make it so I need to approve friend requests before someone can add me? Thanks!

  1. You have to approve someone as a friend. There is no way around this. When it say's they have added you as a friend it simply means that they have requested you approve them. You can click ignore or deny and they won't be your friend.

  2. when somebody requests you as a friend on facebook they are asking you to be their friend.
you are not friends with them yet.
you can choose to accept their request or deny it.
when you send a request they have to approve it to become friends as well
or they can deny it and youre request is deleted.

  3. You always have to approve someone before they become your friend. You shouldn't have to change anything.

  4. You are not their friend until you accept their request. However, they can see your profile until you set your privacy settings.
