   - you can get invited by a friend ,
   - search for groups and join that way ,
   - groups contain a list of " groups in common " could of seen it there ,
   - groups joined by your friends are shown on the left side of group page ,
   - groups joined by friends are also shown in the newsfeed and there profiles

   All I know is that there are far too many invites for stuff as it is without needing knowledge to gain more of them.

   Search for what you want, refine the results by selecting 'groups'. Choose the group you want and then 'join this group'.

   Otherwise join if someone invites you.
